Emerging Sydney photographer set to exhibit renowned Barbie collection
Recently selected as one of the 23 world’s best emerging fashion photographers as part of Iconique’s ‘Excellence in Fashion Photography Award 2009’, Sydney-based MARKUS VAN DRIEL will be exhibiting his renowned tribute to Barbie, the stylish fashion icon, during May.
With 6 years commitment to his photography and with fashion, portraiture and stills photography being his main passions, Van Driel embarked on this unique project not only as part of Barbie’s 50th birthday celebrations, but also to bring Barbie to life and to create an image of her as fashionable and fun-loving.
“The whole shoot was about celebrating life, Barbie and fashion”, explains van Driel. “I love the concept, I took pride in the shoot, and I am really very pleased with the way it turned out”.
Since moving to Sydney three years ago, Van Driel has been focused on his photography. His dedication has paid off and visitors to his exhibition will see the results of his incredible lighting and post-production skills. Working with friend and stylist Lenya Jones, Van Driel has created a series of unique images that have been exceptionally well executed and are of a very high standard.
“I love the reaction that people have had to this shoot. Some have described the work as engaging, sophisticated and touching. Others see it as a bit tongue in cheek. One critique even thought I was making a statement on the superficiality of fashion – an interesting interpretation especially with the exhibition showing so close to fashion week”, continues Van Driel.
The exhibition “Celebrate with Barbie” will run from May 13th – May 27th at Gallery Medium – Level 2, 85 William Street, East Sydney. Exhibition hours are Mon – Fri 10am – 6pm with the opening evening taking place Saturday May 15th between 3-5 pm.
“My life has been one great journey – a chaotic collection of events. But all along this journey I developed a love for colour, beauty and things that just fall outside of the expected. My Barbie collection has allowed me to bring those elements together”, concludes van Driel.
